" Mopane worms "

Published : 11 April 2017
We popped in to Moyo for refreshments after a lovely day in Kirstenbosch gardens, and gave their Mopane worms a go.
These are the edible catepillars of the emperor moth (Gonimbrasia belina), and derive their name from the mopane tree leaves on which they primarily feed.
The catepillars are hand-picked off the trees and the tail end is pinched to expel the innards like a tube of toothpaste. They are then dried in the sun or smoked, and preserved in brine.
Moyo serves them in a slightly spicy tomato sauce. The nutty and smoky flavour is quite pleasant and well complimented by the sauce.
Accompanied by one of Moyo’s delectable cocktails, Mopane worms make for an unusual treat that challenges the squeamish but makes for great photos and stories to tell back home.
The less brave at our table tucked into the desserts menu, with every offering declared delicious.
